Project Description
Stormwater 360 filter cleaning
Case Study
Challenges & Achievements
Clean out 5 Spel and Stormwater 360 modules in poor access areas.
Overview
As part of a subdivision construction on the raglan coast, storm filters were installed to trap silt and debris to prevent it from going into the ocean. These had been cleaned once after installation and now with construction of new houses happening, they would need another clean. Before work could be done we undertook training with Stormwater 360 and SPEL to understand what we would be doing with their products and what would give the best results.
The Project
With development of the subdivision limiting access, we needed to use a smaller unit for the cleaning of the chambers, Vac01 was planned for this work, but was busy with other jobs, so Vac03 was used instead. Vac03 is a JHL cityflex and we used its vacuum and water facilities to suck out the chambers after the filters had been removed. The filters were very heavy (50-80kg) so we used both our confined space equipment and mini excavator to move the filters around on site for productivity and health and safety reasons.
During the project, we were able to reduce the amount of personnel involved by looking at what was causing the team problems and holdups, part of this was the mini excavator being used to mechanize the awkward parts of the job. A lack of for storing and cleaning the filters meant we would store them in a convenient location so we could wash out the filters and vacuum up the debris without having a lot of runoff.
Water samples were taken of the water in the units before cleaning started, this was refrigerated and taken into the lab on the first day.
The Outcome
With our projects supervisor listening carefully to what the client wanted, we were able to deliver what the customer was after and improve on the methodology as we went forward with the job.
The engineer involved was so happy he forwarded his thoughts to the entire operation and called the director of Streamline to thank him and tell him how impressed he was.
